Procedure Outline
This is a 90 minutes procedure performed in local anesthesia. The advantage of this procedure is that a large quantity of stem cells can be administered into the target area.
First the area where the catheter will be inserted is sterilized. Then you will be administered local anesthetics.
Your doctor will pass a needle into the main artery.
A guide wire will be inserted through the needle and the needle will be removed. The catheter is guided to the target area to be studied.
Then a radio-opaque contrast material is injected into the blood vessel through the catheter to make the area show clearly on the CT images. The contrast agent becomes visible by absorbing the x-rays. It visualizes the inside of blood vessels in order to check if the catheter has reached the pancreatic artery.
When the position is confirmed by angiogram, stem cells are injected.
Catheter is removed. Patients are observed for overnight.
Possible risks and complications
Major complications are very rare, however bleeding, bruising at the puncture side, blood vessel damage, allergic reaction to the contrast material may occur.
