Cerebral Palsy Case Study: 2Yrs Premature Boy

The 2-year-old child is Xiao Ao, a premature infant. Two days after his birth he suffered from jaundice for 30 days. MRI and CT of brain showed us he suffered from brain dysplasia. He was diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy. He underwent stem cell therapy for cerebral palsy at our department in Sept. 2007.

  1. Able to say simple words like “Baba, Mama or Bye Bye” with a very small voice
  2. Able to crawl with his left leg dragged
  3. Unable to get his legs straightened while he is in a sitting posture
  4. Able to stand with his back against the wall for a short time
  5. High muscle tone in his lower limbs
  6. Pointed feet phenomenon while standing
  7. Able to walk with the help of other people
  8. Poor fine motor function of his left hand
  9. Poor capacity to communicate with the others

“He can say more  words, and muscle tone of his legs is dramatically decreased”, Xiao Ao’s mother told us.

Xiao Ao has satisfactory results following stem cell transplantation via four rounds of lumbar punctures.

Improvements after stem cell therapy:

  1. Capacity to say long sentences like “Mom, take me home by train” with a strong voice
  2. Increased limb motor coordination function, e.g. he can crawl with four limbs.
  3. Stability of sitting posture
  4. Having his legs straightened while he is sitting
  5. Capacity to stand with his back against the wall for a longer time
  6. Capability to stand for a short time without any help
  7. Decrease in muscle tone of the lower limbs
  8. No pointed feet phenomenon while standing
  9. Ability to walk with slight help of other people
  10. Improved fine motor function of his left hand
  11. Better ability to communicate with the others

Given the significant improvement, Xiao Ao’s parents accompanied him to come to our department for the second stem cell therapy in Jun. 2008.
